During this Introduction to Box Making course you will design and make your very own wooden box guided by John Madden. This course is suitable for beginners and new woodworkers.
About the course
During this course you will design and make a wooden lidded box. You can select from a range of materials including solid timber and wood veneers. You can join your box using either a mitre joint or box joint. You can line your box with decorative paper or fabric. You can finish your box using hard wax oil or paint. If you have ever wanted to get into box making, this is your chance.
What happens in this course
Participants learn the foundations of box making including:
- Box design and material selection
- How to cut and glue up an accurate mitre joint or box joint
- Making and fitting the box lid, including a pull
- How to cut and and lay up wood veneers
- How to make a bottom insert from veneer or fabric
- How to prep wood for finishing
- Finishing using hard wax oil and acrylic paints

Tools & Equipment
All tools and equipment required to complete this course are supplied. Participants will use learn to use hand tools and machinery to build their box. Participants will also learn to cut and lay up veneers using a vacuum press.
Materials & Supplies
All materials and supplies required to complete the course are provided and will be prepared ready to go on the commencement of the workshop.
Safety
Participants must also bring their own personal protection equipment (PPE) including eye and hearing protection, and dust masks. Participant should wear sturdy clothes and covered shoes suitable for woodworking. Participants use of machinery is actively supervised and only permissible once the participants has been inducted on its use.
The Experience
This Introduction to Box Making course is a hybrid woodworking experience where particpants will use both hand tools and machinery to build their piece. This course will be a challenging and fun experience where you will practice woodworking alongside like-minded people. This course is suitable for beginners and new woodworkers seeking a creative challenge.
The course is broken into two three week blocks. Block one is February 19, 26 and March 5. Block two is March 26 and April 2 & 9. The course is limited to only four participants to ensure you receive all the support required.
Who is John Madden
John is a woodworker and designer who works with a range of materials including solid timber and composites. John has worked on a diverse range of projects including custom furniture, hotel and super yacht interiors. John is an experienced instructor who is passionate about sharing his knowledge and helping you develop your craft skills.
