Marquetry is the ancient art of creating decorative patterns using timber veneers, shell or any other material that may be thinly sliced and laid to a substrate. If you want to try your hand at marquetry bringing a new decorative dimension to your craft, and build yourself a groovy wall hung cabinet, then check out this 5-Day Marquetry Workshop with American master craftsman Brian Reid.
 
The 5-Day Marquetry Workshop
 
In this 5-Day Marquetry Workshop allows you to go full circle in developing your  marquetry skills. This the full experience where on days one and two you learn the foundations of marquetry. Then on day three you hone these skills by creating larger more complex patterns and build a functional serving tray. And to complete this 5-Day experience, you take another step forward and build a wall hung cabinet with doors decorated with both marquetry and piercings.
 
Piercing is a technique where you cut through panels removing the negative space to reveal your feature design. This technique is inherently creative and may be applied to an endless range of pieces.
 
In this 5-Day workshop you can build a vertical cabinet using both piercing and marquetry to decorate the single swing door. Alternatively you can build a horizontal cabinet with two sliding doors where the piercing and marquetry interconnect as the doors are opened or closed. To ease you through the construction process you will be supplied with a preprepared cabinet kit.

Tools & Materials
 
Some hand tools will required to complete this workshop. Participants will be supplied with a required tools list and a workshop manual when purchasing a ticket. Participants should wear sturdy clothes and covered shoes suitable for woodworking. Participants need to bring their own PPE including eye and hearing protection and a dust mask.
 
Participants in this 5-Day workshop will be supplied with a cabinet kit to ease the construction process. You may choose between a vertical and horizontal piece both measuring approximately 180mm wide, 600mm long and 120mm deep. Finer details are supplied in the workshop manual. Meals 
 
All meals including lunch, morning and afternoon tea are provided each day of the workshop. The individual dietary needs of participants will be considered.
 
Who is Brian Reid 
 
Brian Reid is a contemporary marquetry artist, furniture maker and educator from Maine USA. For over twenty years, he has taught worldwide in the UK, New Zealand, Australia and Colombia. And at home at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Maine.
 
Brian is an honours graduate of Parnham College (Dorset, UK), he studied under the renowned designer Sir John Makepeace and principal Robert Ingham. He is the 5th from only a total of 8 Americans to have attended this distinguished program.
 
In 2018, Brian was recipient of the Maine Arts Commission's Fellowship in Craft. He was a Windgate Artist-in-Residence at SUNY Purchase in 2017 and in 2012, Reid was honoured with the Artist Award from Boston's Society of Arts and Crafts.
 
Brian is also a really friendly and personable guy who wants you to have a great, stress free experience in the workshop.
