Contemporary marquetry artist and furniture maker Brian Reid is headed down under! In March 2026, Brian is traveling all the way from Maine USA to Australia lead a creative Marquetry Workshop scheduled for March 16 to 20 in Melbourne, a second workshop is being planned, details to come.

Participants in these Marquetry Workshops can choose either a 2-Day, 3-Day or 5-Day creative marquetry experience working in an intimate group of only 8 participants per workshop.

Creative Marquetry with Brian Reid
This series of marquetry workshops are suitable for makers of all skill levels wanting to get creative with timber veneers. Over a series of days, session to session, you can build your marquetry skills as you complete a set of increasingly complex projects carefully guided by master of the craft Brian Reid. Choose from 2-Day, 3-Day and 5-Day formats and enter the world of contemporary marquetry.
In the 2-Day Workshop you will learn stack cut marquetry. Warming up by cutting and joining veneer squares to create parquetry patterns using the knife and tape. Then you will learn to stack cut veneer packs to create more complex designs using the scroll saw. You will glue your marquetry patterns to plywood and finish them ending this 2-Day workshop with a series of veneered trivets that you can take home to impress your family and friends.
If you continue and complete the 3-Day Workshop, you will hone your marquetry skills as you create larger more complex patterns. You can choose one of these patterns and glue it to a plywood substrate and then add solid timber edgings finishing the piece to create a veneered tray. The perfect thing for serving Martinis.
The 5-Day Workshop takes you to the next level as you create small wall hung cabinet. Here Brian will add piercing to the equation, a technique where you cut through your veneered panels removing the negative space to reveal your feature design. You will be supplied with a cabinet kit to ease you through the construction process. Choose from a vertical piece with hinged door or horizontal piece with sliding doors. Either way, this is a woodworking experience you don’t want to miss.
Through this series of Marquetry Workshops, Brian will guide you and support you to realise the best results stress free. This is the key factor in how happy you will be with your work, enhancing the enjoyment and satisfaction you will gain from your time in the workshop. I really love the length of time it takes to create a piece of furniture. It is a privilege being able to concentrate on one thing for so long to create beauty.
