A five day hands-on exploration of traditional marquetry and inlay—“painting with wood" led by master craftsman Frank Strazza. If you are seeking to embleish or decorate your work like never before, this is your opportunity to do so.
Working primarily with hand tools and thicker, shop-sawn veneers, students will learn a range of historical techniques, including:
● Boulle marquetry cut by hand with a fret saw
● English-style paterae based on historical examples
● Sand shading and traditional mastic
● Double-bevel marquetry and hand-cut lettering
● Inlaying marquetry into solid wood
● Decorative stringing
● Pictorial marquetry using naturally colored woods
● Scraper preparation, leveling, and finishing
● Demonstrations of advanced geometric marquetry, including Louis cubes
The emphasis throughout the workshop will be on traditional methods, precision, craftsmanship, and understanding how these techniques can be incorporated into fine furniture and decorative woodworking.
Tools, PPE & Materials
Some hand tools will required to complete this workshop. Participants will be supplied with a required tools list and a workshop manual when purchasing a ticket. All benches and additional equipment required is supplied.
Participants should wear sturdy clothes and covered shoes suitable for woodworking. Participants need to bring their own PPE including eye and hearing protection and a dust mask.
All materials required to complete this masterclass are supplied. Participants are invited to bring their own materials if they wish to work on a particular project. The Yarn
WOOD DUST is hosting a 'Yarn' featuring Frank Strazza during his tour. This is an intimate Q&A type evening where you can get to know our special guest a little better and ask all your burning questions. Your ticket to Frank's Marquetry Masterclass includes entry into this event being held at the Coburg Studios on Thursday evening April 15 from 7.00pm.
Meals
All meals including lunch, morning and afternoon tea are provided each day of the workshop. The individual dietary needs of participants is considered.
