Ever wanted to add Steam Bending Wood to your woodworking repertoire yet you are a little unsure what to do? Then check out this One Day Steam Bending Wood workshop led by Australian craftsman Ross Annels.

What happens in the workshop?

Guided by Ross, during this workshop you will with the group fire up the wood bending steam box and other equipment to complete a series of wood bending challenges including:

  • Freehand wood bends
  • Unsupported wood bends
  • Supported wood bends with straps
  • Bending with hot pipes and other “hot methods”

You will learn how to apply of steam, heat and pressure to coax timber into arcs, folds, and unexpected twists - not only to learn technique, but to feel where material resistance softens into useful malleability. Learning these techniques will open the wood bending door allowing you to add bent and curved elements to your woodworking practice.

Yet it's not all just action, you will also discuss in detail designing and building bending straps, building bending jigs and rigs, species selection, stock selection, moisture content and drying bent components. Drying box “plans” and componentry along with other resources will be made available for you to take home and continue on your bent adventure.

How long is the workshop?

Steam Bending Wood with Ross Annels is a one-day workshop held on Sunday December 14 starting at 9.00am.
