Steam Bending Wood with
Ross Annels...

If you want to add Steam Bending Wood to your woodworking repertoire, then check out this series of two steam bending workshops led by Australian craftsman Ross Annels.

Workshop 1 - Build a Wood Bending Steam Box

Saturday December 13 in Coburg.

In this workshop you will with the group build a steam box using readily available materials and equipment. Together we will build a medium sized steam box suitable for projects up to 1200mm long. You will also be supplied with plans and a materials list to build this box AND plans for a larger steam box for projects up to 2400mm long.

The key learnings in the one day workshop is all about the little nuances of building a functional and reliable steam box. How do you seal it. How to you insert shelving. Whats the best source of steam. By the end of this workshop you will have all the resources and practical knowledge to head off and build a Wood Bending Steam Box of your own!

Workshop 2 - Introduction to Steam Bending Wood

Sunday December 14 in Coburg

Guided by Ross, in this workshop you will with the group fire up the wood bending steam box and other equipment to complete a series of wood bending challenges including:

  • Freehand wood bends

  • Unsupported wood bends

  • Supported wood bends with straps

  • Bending with hot pipes and other “hot methods”

You will learn how to apply of steam, heat and pressure to coax timber into arcs, folds, and unexpected twists - not only to learn technique, but to feel where material resistance softens into useful malleability. Learning these techniques will open the wood bending door allowing you to add bent and curved elements to your woodworking practice.
