Word on the street is that Curtis Turner from Lie-Nielsen USA is travelling all the way to Australia lead a series of half day hand tool workshops during WOOD DUST in Melbourne and Newrybar NSW.​​​

These workshops are a genuine deep dive into the use of traditional hand tools where you will learn all the fundamentals working with an intimate group of only 8 people per session.

 

Lie-Nielsen Hand Tool workshops are perfect for beginners wanting to get started with hand tools, or the pro who want to take their skills to the next level.

About the Lie-Nielsen Hand Tool Workshops

During these workshops Curtis will cover the fundamentals of traditional hand tools. This includes selection, setup, usage and sharpening a set of tools. He will also cover the differences between saws, chisels, planes and their ideal setup and usage. This is a small group hands on session where you can expect to cover:

 

Planes overview - including how to set up and adjust, methods for holding stock, proper technique and using shooting boards.
 

Block planes - discussing and using the Lie-Nielsen 102 and 60-1/2 with fixed and adjustable mouth.
 

Bench planes - discussing and using Planes number 2 - 4 ½, (Smoother), Planes number 5 and 62 (Jack and scrub) and Planes number 7 and 8 (Jointer).
 

Joinery planes - discussing and using shoulder and router planes.

Sharpening - hands on with water stones, Jigs vs free hand sharpening and 
discussion of various methods of sharpening.
 

Hand saws - Western saws v Japanese saws, crosscut vs rip and saw types including  dovetail, carcass and tenon saws.
 

Chisels - discussing bevel edge and mortice chisels, tang v socket, methods for holding stock, proper technique and sharpening.
 

Accuracy -  how practice is important to achieve accuracy, measuring & marking lines, marking with pencil/knife, using squares and reference marking.

These Lie Nielsen hand tool workshops are 4 hours long and limited to only 8 participants per session so you receive all the support that you may require. Refreshments provided and yes, you will get on the tools! Book your bench space today.

Hello, I'm Curtis Turner..

Wood worker, educator & member of the board...

Curtis Turner has worked for Lie-Nielsen Toolworks for over 17 years as a teacher, demonstrator, and member of their board of directors.

As an avid woodworker, he is passionate about helping people get the most out of their woodworking hand tools. Curtis has taught woodworking at many schools and guilds, including the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Maine and Austin School of Furniture in his native Texas. He has traveled across the US, England, Spain, Sweden, Netherlands, Russia, France and Norway teaching woodworkers how to sharpen, set up, and successfully use a wide range of Lie-Nielsen tools. How many participants in the Lie-Nieslen workshops?

 

The number of participants in each workshop is limited to eight participants only.

 

Do I need to bring anything to my Lie-Nielsen workshop.

 

Everything required is supplied including refreshments. Just bring your enthusiasm and questions!

What should I wear?

 

Workshop participants should wear sturdy clothes suitable for woodworking and sensible footwear that completely covers the foot.

 

What is your refund policy

 

If participants cannot attend a Lie-Nielsen Hand Tool Workshop they may receive a full refund if requested no less than 5 days before the workshop start date. Less than 5 days from the course start date, 50% will be refunded. Less than 2 days no refund offered. 

​

What happens if a workshop is cancelled?


If a workshop needs to be cancelled due to insufficient enrolments, we will notify you and issue you with a full refund or arrange a transfer to an alternative workshop.
