This One Day Workshop is a hands-on short course on how to design an object and make part templates for woodworking. It is the perfect course for anyone who wants to develop their design method and template making skills.

 

About the Design Development and Template Making Workshop

 

Ever wondered how craftspeople develop their design ideas and make them real? Being able to draw, layout and make templates is a critical skill if you want to produce your own object designs. And this is not a dark art possessed only by the chosen one's, no! Creating functional designs for woodworking is five percent talent and ninety five percent method and persistence. It is a process you can learn and master with practice. It is also process that allows you to express your creativity through experimentation and play. During this One Day Workshop you will learn a method to conceptualise, resolve and template your own original design. You will also develop the confidence to apply this method back in your own workshop.

 

What happens in this course?

 

This is not a computer aided process - this is a physical process using chalk, pencils and simple drawing tools. You will start by sketching out a design of a small furniture piece or sculpture. You will then refine this sketch to resolve the form and create a detailed drawing. You can use this detailed drawing to make templates of the designs various parts. Step by step you will:

 

•    Sketch out your object design full size using chalk and pencil on a sheet of MDF
•    Refine your sketch to create a detailed dimensioned drawing 
•    Use that detailed drawing to produce parts template drawings
•    Transfer your parts drawings to a second sheet of MDF
•    Cut out your templates and refine their form using the bandsaw and hand tools
•    Learn how to use these templates to layout parts or create machining jigs
•    Learn how to choose appropriate materials, joinery and construction methods 
•    Develop an understanding of proportion, colour and texture

 

Each participant will take home a detailed drawing and a set of templates ready to make their object. If you want a comprehensive and enjoyable woodworking experience that results in an original object design, then this course is for you. 

 

What Core Skills are developed?

 

During this One Day Design Development and Template Making Workshop you will develop a several core skills including:

 

•    Freehand drawing to and technical drawing skills
•    Creating cutting lists and build plan
•    Drawing copying and transfer skills
•    Bandsaw safety, setup and use
•    Using spoke shaves, rasps and other shaping hand tools 
•    Overview of using templates and jig making for routing
•    Problem solving and overcoming the inevitable challenges that woodworking presents

 

The Experience

 

This is woodworking so it will be both a challenging and fun experience. You will be learning alongside like-minded people developing your skills in a non-competitive environment. Experimentation and play are the foundation of creativity and originality. This course is suitable for new woodworkers and the more experienced seeking an original pathway in their work.

 

Who is John Madden

 

John is an award-winning woodworker and designer who works with a range of materials including solid timber and composites. John has worked on a diverse range of projects including custom furniture, hotel and super yacht interiors. John is an experienced instructor who is passionate about sharing his knowledge and helping you develop your craft skills.

 

Details and Preparation

 

This Design Development and Template Making One Day Workshop runs for six hours including a half hour break for lunch. All materials and equipment necessary to complete the workshop are supplied, you need to bring PPE and wear sturdy clothes and shoes. Morning tea is provided, participants are asked to bring their own lunch, there is a kitchen with a refrigerator onsite. There are only four participants in this workshop to ensure you have all the support you require.

 

It is important that participants have a design in mind before attending the course. To assist you in preparing for the course, John will speak to each participant in advance to discuss your proposed design. Your design can include complex curves and shapes. Your design can be just part or whole of an object. For practical reasons, your design should be no larger than regular dining chair.
